Urgh. How do people come up with these things?

New York airport geese are to be cooked and fed to the poor in an effort to prevent incidents such as the forced landing of a plane in the Hudson river

The intriguing plan is part of an effort to avoid incidents like the one that forced the emergency landing of a plane in the Hudson River in January 2009.

The crash was caused by birdstrike, when a flock of geese flew across the flight path of a US Airways plane and were sucked into the engines during takeoff from LaGuardia airport.

The city will now capture geese found in the area and pay for them to be transported to Pennsylvania, where they will be cooked and donated to the city's poor.

A spokesman for the city's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) explained: 'Rather than disposing of them in landfills, we wanted to make sure they do not go to waste.'

The geese are being taken to Pennsylvania after no suitable locations were found in New York that were willing to take the animals.
