Dear Katrina

Thanks for the info. The sponsor is my late wife's niece. Not sure how that works as a family member.

As to school fees etc - there's a growing exodus of bright UK pupils to the USA cos it's cheaper! yes, really. My daughter isn't bright enough for the Ivy Leaguers but many US universities/colleges offer fantastic education.

Hi Paul, are you related to the English lady willing to sponsor you? She can only sponsor family members unless she is employing you on either a H1b visa or as an L1 manager or executive.

As you have a lot of IT experience you could look at getting sponsored by a company for a H1b, these jobs are mainly for people like yourself in IT, however the Universities/colleges do sponsor H1b visas too for professor/lecturer roles.

An average wage in San Diego is around $60k, but it of course depends on the type of employment you are in. You are more likely to get a higher wage in IT, than in Education unfortunately!

Also bear in mind that there are only certain visas on which your daughter can remain in the US once she has turned 21, and college tuition fees in the US can be very expensive!!

Hope that helps!

Hi - long term planning here!

I want to work in San Diego from Aug 2013 for about 5 years! I've been there several times recently so know enough about the town!

Clearly there's a big squeeze on jobs in So Cal - even if I have 35years IT experience!

I also have a daughter who will need to go to college/university, she'll have passed her GCSE's in 2013.

At this stage I think UCSD is the place for me - as I prefer to work in Education rather than business!

On the other hand I'd love to work at SeaWorld, or somewhere in Balboa park!

I have a sponsor - English lady, now a naturalised American, living in LA - and am trawling through all the info on this site, and others, about Visa's, health issues etc.

One thing I can't work out is what is an 'average wage' in San Diego. Here in the UK I can relate to the average wage and work out how much I need to earn for a reasonable lifestyle.

That's it for now.

Look forward to any help!

Paul
